Bio

Steve’s love for sports began at an early age while going to Chapel Hill with his family for Tar Heel football and basketball games. Football was his passion as a player and fan through high school, but he was also introduced to golf at an early age and the local muni golf course served as his home away from home during the summers. In 1974, at age 14, his home course for his high school golf team played host to the 1974 PGA Championship and it was there that he met Tom Watson and followed him for the entire round. When Watson flipped him an autographed RAM golf ball on #14, the deal was sealed for his love for the game and for Watson.

Steve’s interest in the inner workings of sports only grew in college where he was a student volunteer for the Charlotte 49ers Athletics Department and men’s basketball team. Upon graduation, his first job with the Gillette Company served as the catalyst for his career in sports marketing as he observed from the best how to leverage consumer brands successfully through sports sponsorship and promotion. In 1997, Steve took the entrepreneurial plunge and founded Signature Sports Group, the parent company of 5 Clubs, and for over 25 years the company has taken great pride in their work and the relationships that have built along the way. Outside of work, he loves spending time with his family and teeing it up with friends.
