Sleepy Hollow Country Club

Scarborough, NY

Few clubs in America have a richer history, literally, than Sleepy Hollow. The estate where the club resides was originally owned by Colonel Elliot Fitch Shephard and his wife Margaret Vanderbilt Shephard. Margaret was the granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt. The estate was sold to a group of men who were among the wealthiest in the country and they established the Sleepy Hollow Country Club. The golf course has holes designed by C.B. MacDonald and A.W. Tillinghast and the austere estate home is still a central structure of the club today. The club logo is genius and stands by itself as impossible to duplicate. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a short story written by Washington Irving.  The story originates in a glen near Tarry Town, New York which is a town that sits very close to the club’s location. The fictional story tells of Sleep Hollow as a haunting place with ghosts and being a bewitched area. The folklore of the headless horseman has been around since the 15th century in storytelling and this short story written by Irving tells the tale of the headless horseman terrorizing the area.  The club logo celebrates the area while being a great crest for all gear and very few logos look better on letterhead.  The color contrasts of blue and brown in the horse and the headless horseman are fantastic.  Sleepy Hollow is a majestic site and its logo befits the haunting history of the estate and the area right along the shores of the Hudson River.
